There at one time lived a man from Weirenyu who was about to purchase some shoes. He had measured his feet in advance, and set the measurements on a chair. When it came time for him to go to the marketplace, he neglected to carry the measurements with him. He had already selected the shoes that he desired, and then said, "I neglected to bring the measurements, I need to return to my abode and get them." He went back home to get the measurements, but by the time he got back the marketplace was closed, so he could not buy the shoes. People would inquire of him, "Why did you not simply don the shoes to ascertain their fit?" To this he responded, "I would instead trust the measurements, as I don't believe myself." And this is what is meant by “a man from Weirenyu purchasing shoes.”
