New page

Herbalism is the foundation of all medicine. Each herbal preparation is a concoction bespoken to the particular patient. The physician typically plans a therapeutic using one or two principal components directly relevant to the condition to be treated. Then the healer adds other constituents to align the recipe to the patient's yin/yang status. Occasionally, components are called for to counteract harmful or pernicious side effects of the principal ingredients. Some herbs necessitate the use of other components as catalysts to make the concoction efficacious. The later steps demand considerable skill and knowledge, and mark the distinctions among good doctors and incompetents. Deftly handling the equipoise and synergy of all the constituents is more crucial to truly effective remedies than the effects of ingredients item-by-item.

Herbalism integrates portions from all organs of plants, including the leaves, stems, flowers, and roots, and also components of animal and mineral origin. The use of certain ingredients (such as phoenix feathers in Phoenix Down potions) is contentious and has created a black market of poachers.

Herbs are fixed in several different manners. Raw herbs can be boiled for teas or extracts. One lot of herbs is ordinarily concentrated twice over the course of one hour. Prepared herbs can also be incorporated into pills, tinctures, or poultices, among other techniques.

At the heart of herbalism are the fifty fundamental herbs. They are classified according to "temperature" (i.e., Yin/Yang qualities) and "flavor". Usually temperature is indicated as one of four natures, "hot" for strongly Yang-biased quality, "warm" for weakly Yang-biased, "cool" for weakly Yin, and "cold" for strongly Yin. The five flavors are umami, sweet, acrid, tart, and piquant. Each of the twelve organ systems is associated with a unique pair of flavors (in two cases, the "pair" is actually umami & umami or acrid & acrid).

The twelve organ systems are
*Respiratory
*Skeletal
*Muscular
*Joints
*Digestive
*Reproductive
*Urinary
*Endocrine
*Cardiovascular
*Lymphatic
*Nervous
