Ho was the runt of a litter of hunting dogs born about the time Lijuan began work for the huntsmaster of House Sung. Too weak to compete with his siblings for food, Ho would have died had the huntsmaster not assigned Lijuan to hand feed him through the first weeks of his life.
Lijuan and Ho bonded, and when Lijuan fled House Zhen she took Ho with her.
