If you already have armor, is there any mechanism for upgrading it within type? For Wei Han's specific example, it would be replacing some of the scales in his Mountain Scale armor with heavier ones to increase the defense. To do this, would he need to buy or requisition an entire new set of armor? --Shen Wei Han 12:30, 17 June 2009 (EDT)

An armorer may be able to make use of one suit of armor in constructing a different heavier suit; that would be something that you would have to negotiate with him. That might or might not provide something of a price break for what would otherwise be "sell one suit to buy a better suit", depending. (Note that Wei Han's armor is property of the army, rather than his own property; he's not supposed to sell it or lose it.) --Boojum 13:58, 17 June 2009 (EDT)

You could attempt to interact with the army bureaucracy to convince them that you need better armor - but that bears some danger of them deciding that they should give you courier armor instead of North Wall Infantry armor, and they might not see "keep Cai Wen alive" as requiring a huge investment. So that's kind of dicey. And yes, if we decide we want the party to be better-armored, we'll probably do something to arrange that. But it's very rare that the GMs want the PCs to have armor more strongly than the players do. :) --Boojum 14:28, 17 June 2009 (EDT)

The better the armor is, the more work it is, but it's something a competent armorer can do, assuming that neither person is crazily sized. --Boojum 15:26, 17 June 2009 (EDT)
