The 'u' in 'bimolecular' is Lines, not Handwriting. The 'k' in 'stock exchange' is Running. Your spreadsheet stops at 'jury' but obviously you've done more than that. Xian 17:32, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

Bird Font

• OK, so a quick look at your sheet so far indicates that the bird font gives 4 letters in order: b,o,t,h. Perhaps looking further at just bird font might be useful to see if that's a coincidence or actual info. I don't see any similar pattern in the other fonts so far. -Derrick

That works. Here's the text from the bird font [] indicate my best guess; I'm not the most detail oriented person.

both house zhen and house sung have letters written by house members and others which are more formally written by scribes however there are also some letters from house zhen which seem to be written in very good forgeries of the original handwriting from house zhen

I got that just by writing down each character that was in the bird font; color didn't seem to matter. Another time I might continue with the spreadsheet.

My initial thought upon seeing the puzzle is to separate out the letters of each particular typeface/color to see if they spell anything when concatenated. However, the page makes my eyes hurt, so I leave the actual trying of it to someone else. -Shen-Ji

I find the page hurts less if I look at it magnified many times (600% or more). Colors (interestingly there seems to be only one brown?): yellow, dark yellow; orange, red-orange; red, brick red; brown; blue-green, gray-green; Fonts: ugh, that would be much easier if knew the names of fonts. Letter frequency; word frequency

I note that there are an unusual number of each of {j, q, x, z}. In ordinary English text they're the four rarest letters, and here they're still four of the five rarest letters, but they appear at 5-10 times the frequency they would in normal text; for example, there are 30 'q's in less than 3000 letters, over 1%; in normal text 'q' is less than 0.1% of the letters. (There's also unusually few 't's, but I'm not as confident that that's anything.)

The word 'bermuda' appears twice, once in 'bermuda grass' and once in 'bermuda shorts'. The word 'grass' appears twice, once in 'bermuda grass' and once in 'johnson grass'. The word 'knot' appears twice, once in 'weaver's knot' (adjacent to 'johnson grass') and once in 'stevedore knot'. The word 'jelly' appears twice, once in 'calf's-foot jelly' and once in 'royal jelly'. Xian 04:18, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

Fonts entered, question answered

I've put the fonts in the spreadsheet. It was a lot of work, so I'm not going to do colors too.

I took the liberty of assuming that the apostrophes and the hyphens are from the same black font, which I've dubbed Knuth. I've also named the "font" for the spaces between words 'u', because blank lines break the spreadsheet autocomplete.

I don't know what a lowercase 'g' in the Lines font looks like; there are several lowercase 'g's that look vaguely like the Thin 'g' but rotated, so I've assigned them to Lines by process of elimination, even though they look mildly out of place in that font.

I also asked my yes/no question:

Is the varying typographic baseline position significant?

Yes.

So the spreadsheet probably needs a column to indicate the levitating letters.Xian 22:31, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

No font except Bird seems to write a simple message.

The orange letters begin: "in many cases"

But no other colors seem to write a simple message.

Perhaps there is only one message per distinguishing feature. Or, more sinisterly, perhaps we need to combine features (orange AND line height) to pick out messages.

The orange letters read: "in many cases house sung has kept a draft of a letter which was sent and comparing the letter to the reply reveals that the reply seems to be slightly more angry than would seem to be called for as if there are insults perceived which were not written" Xian 00:28, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
