Shtick Stacking/Modifying

What about schticks that modify your other schticks? (e.g. "my Magic Missile does successes*2 instead of *1")?
And, does stacking mean that if I have two Magic Missile schticks, each of which does successes*1, I can stack them to get successes*2 on a given roll? --Andrea

  • You can buy a shtick that says "I can cast Magic Missile with successes*2 damage", but it doesn't alter a previous shtick with a lower damage multiplier. (It could still be worth it, if they're low-frequency.)
Shticks that grant multipliers do not stack. You can't get a x9 multiplier (or even a x6) on your sword by buying a x3 multiplier twice.
Shticks that add dice can add together (within dice limits), and shticks with low frequency add. If you buy two copies of a shtick that says "I can talk to animals, once a day", then you can talk to animals twice a day. Boojum 16:53, 8 February 2009 (EST)
  • Even relatively higher frequencies... "I can ignore an arrow 1/phase" bought twice lets you ignore an arrow twice a phase. --Mjperson 17:00, 8 February 2009 (EST)
  • (Although for nearly anything, if you think you're going to want to do it more than once a phase, it's cheaper to buy it always on than buying two separate 1/phase shticks - Charles)
  • (Yes, but... always on may bump it to another power level. And see below where two 1/phase schticks let you get past a single counteracting schtick. --Ringrose 14:35, 23 February 2009 (EST) )
  • Also, buying the same shtick twice can get around cases where someone buys immunity to that shtick. IE Two shticks in "Automatic Disarm" can disarm a person with a single shtick in "Can't be Disarmed." --Mjperson 18:19, 8 February 2009 (EST)
  • Note that if you buy "Automatic Disarm" twice, and try to disarm someone with "Can't be Disarmed", you can activate the second copy of disarm after the first one doesn't work. This is probably one of the only times that it is okay to activate an offensive shtick after the fact. Boojum 19:39, 9 February 2009 (EST)

On duration: what if you want something that's "I have this at frequency five (or maybe four), except it goes down when X happens and can't be set back up until the next scene?" Is that a limitation on power, or on frequency?

  • If X is beyond your control it's probably Frequency limiting. --Mjperson 14:47, 23 February 2009 (EST)

Teaching schticks

Is there any reward to the person who helps somebody else learn a schtick? The trainer has taken something special to his character and made it more widely available. Do they gain anything? --Shen Wei Han 17:19, 4 March 2009 (EST)

  • There is quite often a debt of honor, gratitude, and service (not to mention sometimes money) between a student and their master, but it is not one which gives the trainer an automatic mechanical benefit. (As mentioned elsewhere, though, upgrading in frequency may be allowed, and teaching to a lower frequency is allowed.) --Boojum 23:15, 4 March 2009 (EST)

Frequency & Puttering

Can sthicks be used during puttering and does shtick frequency have any effect on this? --Kate 15:42, 8 May 2009 (EDT)

The puttering time between two adjacent runs counts as a run for the purposes of things with frequency. So, you can use a once-a-run shtick once during a puttering chunk between two runs, and you can add your Yang to one yang-like roll between runs. One puttering thread/conversation/investigation is usually one "scene", though there will be the occasional exception. --Boojum 16:28, 8 May 2009 (EDT)
