Return of Lord and Lady Teng

Lord Tokai Takanata
c/o Silken Wings Circus

Esteemed Sir:

I write to inform you that my master and mistress seem to be entirely themselves again. A young woman named Ming I called on them, and they were quite quick to meet with her. After their meeting, Lord and Lady Teng were unwilling to speak of their troubles, but behaved as if they had returned from a long trip. They are eager for news of their son and daughter, if you have any to provide, but even without more aid or information, they and I are in your debt.

Letter from Myeong Duc

Myeong-qinshu Shen-Ji

As you may have heard, Dinh Thuy, the Hand on the Sword of All the Clans, has taken his life to redeem his disgrace, after failing the King and the Clans. The nature of this disgrace is not clear, but there is an obvious opening in prestige and power, were someone new to be chosen. You are often well-informed about mysteries, so if you have any additional information that would let us know whether to place one of the Clan in the running for this position, please advise.

Letter from Chien-Po

Master Zhou of the White Pagoda and the Warrior Poet Tokai Takanata

I write to you in concern, as you have taken some interest in the doings of my friend Fa Mulan. I do not know if there is anything to be done, but I think someone not in the Army should know where she has gone. Our small company was transferred to the South - I think that many of those who were sent were considered to be troublemakers, or overly independent, or otherwise less than ideal as soldiers go - and given over to the command of Sea Lord Miyora. However, I was deemed to be... unseaworthy... and have been transferred to the Southern Wall, on my most lonesome own. The Fleet, under Sea Lord Miyora and the Obsidian Warlord, has sailed south, to I know not what, and while I am sure that the Sea Lord and the Warlord plan to return, I worry that many of those who were taken are considered particularly expendable, and my heart chills as cold as the North.

Text message from Broken Sword

Cai Wen finds this on one of this magical papers.

He's here! Lucky Chang is here! Well, not here, but down in the inn on the border. Hurry!

Are you reading this?

Hello?

Damn it. Missed him.

Lucky Chang Usurping White Pagoda

Xiao Fa -

It is not my place to interfere with the leadership of the White Pagoda, or those who have been placed in authority for a time, so I do not wish to officially tell tales to Master Zhou. And I think it is not actually a problem, but it did worry us for a few days. As you know, the monks of the Steadfast Heart have been given temporary authority over the White Pagoda, and if Master Zhou leaves it in their care for a year, they will consider that authority permanently granted. That year still has some months left to run - until Serpent - but they have certainly begun to believe that the year will elapse with no change. So the question becomes, who will be the Master in the future? It is a fine and valid question to consider - but as the monks travel between the White Pagoda and the temples in the North, some of them have been encountering a certain gambler, who seems particularly interested in what they do and believe. He stays away from Iron Fortress, and from the Mountain itself, but he has been spoken of in the taverns not far to the east. Broken Sword dashed down to catch him, and he seems to have been run off; I have spoken with the monks who have spoken to him, and none seem to have entered into any deals or bets with him, nor do they seem particularly persuaded of his righteousness, so I think his doings may come to naught after all. Nevertheless, I thought someone should know.

Hidden City Renaming Mechanic

Esteemed masters Tokai and Merit:

The excitement of the season here in the capital is the Logistical Proposal of Seven Thoughts, which everyone who is anyone has an opinion about. In short, it is a discussion of the name of the Hidden City, which is, obviously, no longer hidden. There is a rather sentimental proposal of calling the city the Throne of the Dragon, which you may have heard, originating as it does with Regent Ishii. Other names in the running are the Jade City, the Imperial Web, the Concentricity, the City of Gates, and the Fountainhead. My weight in such a mechanic is but small - nevertheless, if my Esteemed Masters have any instructions, I am at their disposal.

Seahorse Cavalry

Cai Wen -

I wanted to let you know - the Seahorse Cavalry has been training in underwater operations. We don't have too many rings of water breathing, but did you know that you can breathe through a straw beneath the surface of the water? You have to not breathe out through the same straw - that doesn't work.

Anyhow, His Highness has had us training to be a very stealthy force - or, at least, stealthy anywhere there is water or river - and I've convinced him that when a small force is being sent far from home into uncertain conditions, the force needs a great deal of independent initiative and autonomy. It isn't really "helpfully disobedient", as you put it, but I think we will have quite a bit of leeway to be helpfully disobedient if anything actually happens.
