The Sanguandadi, or Three Governing Sovereigns, personifications of breath, essence, and spirit, are believed to be the respective rulers of the three Azure Realms. Ho Tan Mi is the one most comprehensible to humans and the one most likely to intercede in mortal affairs. The other two are less well understood, although it is believed that one is associated with the balance of Yin and Yang and that one is concerned with energy and time. Some ancient texts refer to a bizarre firm of sorcery that was based not on the five elements or the Cycle, but instead on the three Venerable Principles, but scholars agree that this is very likely a wild flight of fantasy.
