A party is called at the Steel Palace, under the auspices of the Royal Social Office, and partially arranged by Winston. Many PCs make plans to go.

The Steel Palace is lit up for the party with candles and lanterns, and well stocked with food and flowers. The decor is a little eccentric, given that most of the structure is straight out of Spooky Evil Villain Central, but most of the sharper bits have been hung over with draperies, and festooned with floral garlands. If one doesn't pay too much attention, it's quite lovely and pastoral; if one *is* the sort that pays attention, then you spot the occasional jaggy spike peeking out here and there, but you also probably remember back when it was all steel jaggies and lit by a spooky eldritch glow instead of lamp oil, and it's quite an improvement.

The party doesn't totally have the run of the palace, of course, but it does have the run of the main court area. King Gaeric, and the rest of his Party of Adventurers, are all in attendance, though it's a brave party-goer who approaches any of them early. They are:

  • King Gaeric Cooper: Almost too friendly-looking to be a proper king, King Gaeric has a ready smile and a surprising lack of grandeur. Of the "party", he's actually the most approachable-looking, if you forget that he's the King.
  • Deanna Saa (Priestess of Taela). She's never out of line of sight of Gaeric, and seems quiet and reserved.
  • Adaris Lyon, Gaeric's shieldbrother and head of the Tourmaline Guard now. He's the *least* approachable-looking of the group, and watches everyone as if determining how much of a threat they are.
  • Rian. Short and slight, he tends to lean against a wall, surveying the room wryly. It looks like he's perfectly *capable* of shmoozing, he just hasn't started yet.
  • Ilena the Grey, who has the vague look of a mage who doesn't expect anyone else to be interested in discussing thaumalogical recursion gradients with her.
  • Tannhause Kendrick. Of middling height and more than middling girth, Conjurer Kendrick would be exceedingly jolly-looking if his smile reached his eyes.
  • Mirzada. A dark-skinned southerner, dressed in tan leather, with her hair cut nearly so short as to be bald. She smiles with sparkling eyes, and moves with the grace of a tiger.

Obvious PCs in attendance are Adara, Blaze, and Winston. Drake arrives a little late, and the last of the PCs has mostly been discovered now: Vielle.

Other notable named NPCs include:

  • Roland Fyle (of the Department of Internal Affairs)
  • Morgan (Master of Morgan's Grove)
  • Davar i Varuun (high priest of Varuun)
  • the strikingly lovely Elenwe (a singer)
  • the Parade Master
  • Jennace Windspeaker, mage of the Acadystra
  • Pellin, the Archivist at the Grand Library
  • Lord and Lady Vandegliss of Agate
  • a whole bunch of merchanty types in nearly all flavors.

If there is a particular NPC who you'd like to be there, or a particular kind of NPC, and it's plausible, you can spend a cookie to have them be there.

There is also an Urbanity Mechanic.

For the benefit of those keeping score at home, may I request that we edit this list so that "and"s signify "talking to all these people in the same conversation," and separate conversations are separate items? :) -- Andrea I made some changes to the conversations I was in. -- Mike
